Frequently Asked Questions
If I take a course in Alberta, can I work in BC?
WorksafeBC has specific requirements for individuals who obtain a first aid certification outside of British Columbia. Please click here, WorkSafeBC, for more information.
How do I know which first aid course I need?
Many employers, education programs, or volunteer groups will be particular about which first aid you should have. We recommend speaking with them before registering or calling in and asking one of our knowledgeable Customer Service Team Members for assistance.
What is the most requested first aid level for an Alberta workplace or job site?
The Intermediate (Standard) First Aid program is the most common, which covers CPR for Adults, Children, and Infants, wound care, hot and cold emergencies, special medical conditions, poisons, head injuries, and bone, muscle, and joint injuries.
I already have CPR certification; can I take the First Aid portion?
No. Sorry, this is not available here at AHASTI.
Can I attend a recertification if my current certification has expired (even by one day)?
No. This regulation has been determined by the Canadian Red Cross and legislative bodies in each province to ensure program compliance. Instructors and/or staff at AHASTI cannot make exceptions regardless of reason. AHASTI recommends that individuals register to attend a recertification a minimum of four weeks prior to the expiry date in the event a class has low enrolment or a change in the registrant's work or personal schedule or illness.
